Opponent- #8 Ralston Valley (13-5) 5A
Outcome- Win 9-4
Common opponents- Lakewood
Comments- Ralston Valley is considered one of the best baseball programs in the state and has consistently competed for the state championship in both 4A and 5A and was last season’s 5A runner up. The Spartans beat RV 9-4, the Mustangs were ranked 8th in the state and are currently ranked 8th. Common opponent is Lakewood, both teams defeated Lakewood.
Opponent- Abraham Lincoln (17-2) 5A
Outcome- Win 5-0
Common opponents- DPL
Comments- Lincoln was an unchallenged 11-0 at this point in time. TJ dominated Lincoln in all aspect of the game, shutting out the Lancers and handing them their first of only two losses. Common opponents are the entire Denver Public League. TJ was unbeaten in DPL play while Lincoln’s only loss was at the hands of the Spartans.
Opponent- Denver East (8-6) 5A
Outcome- Win 15-2
Common opponents- DPL
Comments- TJ locked up the league title VS. East on 4/22 with a convincing victory over the top contender (at the time) in the DPL. Common opponents are all of DPL in which the Spartans were 8-0.
Opponent- Prairie View (12-6) 5A
Outcome- Win 5-4
Common opponents- Gateway
Comments- Both teams battled for nearly 3 hours and 11 innings. Finally in the bottom of the 11th the Spartans prevailed. This was a huge win for TJ considering that PV beat 7th ranked Thompson Valley whereas TJ sits just beneath Thompson Valley at #8
VITAL LOSSES
Opponent- #1 Cherry Creek (7-6) 5A
Outcome- Loss 13-3
Comments- Creek was ranked #1 in the 5A poll at the time. Costly errors proved to be to much for the Spartans to overcome against the nationally respected and multiple time state champion Bruins.
Opponent- Abraham Lincoln (17-2) 5A
Outcome- Loss 9-7
Comments- The Spartans chose to throw # 2 pitcher Joe Sedig to get experience against a playoff quality team. TJ would allow the game to get away late as the Lancers would not be denied.
Opponent- Mtn. View (8-10)
Outcome- Loss 2-0
Comments- Kyle Freeland threw as good a game as he had all season. TJ lost on two catcher pass balls allowing Mtn. View runners to score. Mtn. View had wonderful placement of position players in this game as the Spartans hit 7 balls hard right at Mtn. View defenders. Also note that 4A competitors Thompson Valley and Silver Creek also lost to last season’s 4A state champs.
SEASON IN REVIEW
Thomas Jefferson Baseball had to be prepared to play playoff quality opponents right out of the gate this season opening up with 4A top ranked foe Golden. The Spartans and Demons battled to a 4-4 Tie before the game was called for daylight. On 3/19 TJ traveled to Cherry Creek to take on another #1 (5A). The Spartans fell to 2-1-1 on the season as they were unable to rebound from the first inning jitters leaving 3 runners on base and committing two errors. The Spartans would redeem themselves on 3/24 with a convincing victory over 2010 5A runner up and 8th ranked Ralston Valley 9-4, continuing an 8 game winning streak before dropping a close one to Abraham Lincoln 9-7 in a non-league game. Again the Spartans would bounce back on 4/22 locking up the league title with a 15-2 victory over Denver East completing a sweep (8-0) of the Denver Public League. TJ would go on to win there next three including a no hitter of George Washington by Spartan ace and 4A player of the year candidate Kyle Freeland, before losing a third game to 2010 4A state champ Mtn. View 2-0. Yet again the Spartans would land on their feet winning the final two games of the season against quality 5A clubs Prairie View 5-4 and Standley Lake 10-0 finishing the season 15-3.
The Spartans would earn the #4 seed in the 4A state tournament opening up with a hard fought victory over a gritty Longmont club 2-1. A vital game in which several scouts flew in to see Spartan ace Kyle Freeland. The Spartans would have to wait a couple days to get back to their state title aspirations as the rain pushed the district back to Monday May 16th. The Spartans would run in to a hot and determined Pueblo West Team that had previously defeated Northridge. Pueblo West would bring an end to the Spartans run with an 8-7 upset. A game in which TJ committed six errors and give up a three run lead.
